Open time is the period during which a hot melt adhesive remains sufficiently molten and workable after application to form an effective bond.
During this period, the adhesive must still be able to wet the bonding surface and establish contact when the two materials are joined.
If the adhesive cools too quickly before the surfaces are properly joined, bonding performance may decrease. If the open time is too long for a particular process, production speed and setting behavior may also be affected.
Open time depends on factors such as adhesive formulation, application temperature, substrate temperature, adhesive amount, production speed and ambient conditions.
Therefore, there is no universal open time suitable for every hot melt adhesive or application. The correct processing window should be determined according to the specific adhesive grade and production process.
